Who are the Guffys and Guffy Family
wines? Dave, Julie and their daughters, Nicole and
Jenny of course! A family who enjoys being a family - living, loving and always
laughing - not necessarily in that order... Probably the most rewarding
achievement
for Dave and Julie is the development of this wine business based
solely on their own resources. A lot of long hours, hard work and
sacrifices have paved the way for these
wines. And there is nothing better to the Guffys at the end of the day then a
great glass of wine!
Dave Guffy loves to eat and drink! And no one does it better - just spend
an evening with him near the BBQ or in the kitchen where he is the master of his
domain. While working at restaurants in San Luis Obispo during his college
days, he realized the course his life would take. After a harvest
internship confirmed his career pathway, Dave transferred from Cal Poly to
Fresno State University to earn
his degree in winemaking.
His first winery position landed him back on
the Central Coast as production
manager at Corbett Canyon Vineyards where he crossed paths with Julie who was
working in the lab. Several years later, Dave took the assistant winemaker
position at a Kendall-Jackson Artisan and Estates winery called Cambria Winery
and Vineyards. Soon he became Winemaker and focused exclusively on Rhone
and Burgundian style wines. In 1999, Dave moved his family to Napa to take over
the
helm
at the Hess Collection where he still presides today as the Director of
Winemaking.
Growing up in the OC, who would have thought
that Julie Carollo would one day end up being a farmer. After a few wine tastings, Julie set her sights on
viticulture and enology. What a great way to make a living - being outside in
the vineyard and tasting wines all day - so she thought! While
attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, she earned two degrees - one in Biology and
one in Fruit Science. Julie has worked in all aspects of the winery for nearly
20 years - from lab technician & vineyard sampling to enologist on California’s Central Coast. She took a few
years off to enjoy her
role as Mom while still being active as the Executive Director of the Central
Coast Winegrowers Association.
When Dave’s new job
relocated the family to Napa, Julie took a part time job as a sensory analyst
for VinQuiry, specializing in TCA determinations/thresholds and wine defects.
Today, Julie represents Knox Industries selling the finest barrels of Taransaud,
Francios Freres and Kadar Hungary cooperages. She actually gets paid for
listening to Mel's bad jokes while giving Moke a break after 10 years.
Dave and the Guffy girls reside in the
beautiful Congress Valley area of north Carneros on their estate Syrah vineyard. They
were not going to call their wines Guffy Family Wines, unless everyone in the
family participated. That means Nicole and Jenny REALLY do help out in every
aspect of the process from lifting the wires during pruning to the QC at
bottling. Not to say there isn't a little bit of whining along the way.
Even the family pets get into the action. While Mittens and Mocha keep the
gophers on the run, Sam, the black Labrador, guards the cave and keeps the deer
at bay.
We hope you enjoy Guffy Family Wines!
